WE’RE HITTIN THE ROAD!!

WE’RE HITTIN THE ROAD!!

Why now?

Timing is Everything!  We’ve always known that the things we valued most in life weren’t things at all, but rather the places we went, the adventures we had, the foods we ate, the beer and wine we drank and the people we met.  But life is full of responsibilities and it’s not until our responsibilities were taken care of that we started to make plans and turn our dream of full-time travel into reality.  We knew that full-time travel would mean having lots of incredible experiences and adventures, but we knew that there would also be tradeoffs to make.  For us, we think the biggest tradeoff is knowing that we’ll be missing out on lots of events, milestones and precious moments with friends and family back home.  Leaving friends and family and not having a plan for when your next visit will be is definitely the hardest part thus far.

How did we make it happen?

Since we took the leap (about 1 year ago) and started putting our plan in motion, things have been extremely busy for us.  We’ve been pretty stressed with working full-time jobs, purchasing everything that we are going to need, planning out the final logistics and trying to see as much of our family and friends as possible before we leave. It feels like it has taken an extraordinary amount of effort to get us to this point – the point of being ready to launch into this new lifestyle. And the fact is, it HAS been a ton of effort to get us here.

We recently reflected on everything that we’ve accomplished to get us to this point. A year ago we still owned our house in Maine, I was still working full-time in the conservation field and John was traveling to Japan for his consulting work.  Here we are today – about to embark on this epic adventure and since then we have sold our house and two additional lots, held vigil with John’s Mom during the last precious week of her life on this beautiful planet, managed her estate and sold that property, sold and gave away so much of our own stuff, moved into a small condo, researched and bought an RV, sold two vehicles, bought our Jeep (dinghy) to tow behind the RV, sold and gave away even more of our stuff, did the fun part of route planning and wanderlusting, I quit my dream job about a month ago and John continues to work on several big projects.  You could say it has been quite a year. When we made the decision to make this dream a reality I don’t think we realized how difficult it would be but I guess any major life event isn’t easy. However, we somehow crammed in several life events in one year, which is generally how we roll - we always GO BIG!!  It felt extremely overwhelming at times mainly because we had no idea what we were doing. We’ve never owned an RV or even camped in one until we bought “Pearl”.  Yep, we were and still are pretty clueless about all that this new lifestyle will bring, but we’ve persevered because we want it pretty bad. All along we’ve tried to keep the goal in sight, dreaming about the days soon to be, where we will be living our best life, outside, and experiencing world famous adventure destinations.
